PROGRAMS AT ROSE HALL
Rose Hall is Cortland’s home for music.
Featuring the best in local, regional, and international talent, Rose Hall is proud to present world-class musicians on two stages year-round.
With support from the Dan and Rose McNeil Foundation, Rose Hall is also a partner of several local community groups and organizations including the Homer Youth Orchestra, Choral Union, SUNY Cortland College-Community Orchestra, and the Cortland High School Modern Band program.
Max Buckholtz, conductor
SUNY Cortland Community Orchestra
Co-sponsored by SUNY Cortland and the Dan and Rose McNeil Foundation, the SUNY Cortland College-Community Orchestra is comprised of students and members of the Cortland community.
Conducted by Max Buckholtz, rehearsals take place in the Concert Hall on Mondays from 7-9pm and SUNY Cortland students may receive course credit (MUS 256, one credit hour). Auditions are held during the first two rehearsals during the first week of classes and seasonal concerts are presented in December and April.
Choral Union
Under the direction of conductor David Neal, the Choral Union is a mixed-voice ensemble of 60-75 singers made up of students and community members.
Sponsored collaboratively by SUNY Cortland and the Dan & Rose McNeil Foundation, its mission is to provide an opportunity for Cortland students, faculty, and staff to join adult volunteer singers of Central New York in performing the masterworks of the choral tradition. There is no audition required for membership, experience in and commitment to artistic choral singing is expected, and all interested singers are welcome.
CHS Modern Band
Cortland High School’s Modern Band program gives students the opportunity and resources to explore popular musical styles in an authentic, real-world learning environment through faculty facilitators, peer mentors, and self-teaching. Students who take modern band learn the basics of rock band instruments such as drums, bass, guitar, and keyboard, as well as new instruments and programs that fall under music technology and production. Not So Silent Night, the annual concert hosted in December at Rose Hall, features live performances by CHS Modern Band students showcasing cover songs and original compositions written in class.
Homer Youth Orchestra
The Homer Youth Orchestra serves area youth ages 4-25 years old and offers lessons, ensemble participation, and instrument rental completely free for all participants.
The magic that makes it all happen: 6,000 pages of music, $8,000 of rental instruments, 500 volunteer teaching hours, six classrooms at Rose Hall, and two concerts at Center for the Arts of Homer.
